Energy Transition Engineering
InTIME (Interdisciplinary Transition Innovation, Management and Engineering)
This course aims to inspire and enable discovery and realization of effective change toward carbon emissions downshift in a variety of organizational contexts (engineering, education, business, government, non-profit organization, and community). The course explores new quantitative understanding of climate and resource challenges of unsustainable energy, resource, materials and growth. The course guides students to advance their related capabilities, competencies, and strategies. The personal, interpersonal, organizational, and infrastructural dimensions of change leadership for energy and resource transition are addressed.
A variety of specific case studies and examples of transition engineering in practice are explored. Transition engineering is a process of innovation and discovery when facing intractible wicked problems like urban car congestion, lack of affordable housing, fuel poverty, academic air travel. Transition engineering is also a new process of due diligence in any kind of industrial or civic enterprise. Interdependencies between finance, politics, relationships, cognitive processes, capacity building, communications and technology are discussed. Approaches for quantifying ideas, problems and scenarios are practiced. The microcredential is interdisciplinary in that it teaches a new process that brings together leadership and engineering.
The course teaches the Interdisciplinary Transition Innovation, Management and Engineering InTIME© process, which has been developed through 15 years of research. The leadership modules use the process which is a journey of exploration of possibilities and constraints to innovate new pathways that break with business as usual. The engineering modules use the InTIME process which is an innovation path-break. In the combination modules, the leadership and engineering students learn about the mega-issues of unsustainability, the economics of transition and the ways that communication and naratives frame and limit possibilities. Students leave the course with a deeper experiential knowledge of change management because they are required to complete a project involving a real life project in their area of work and responsibility. It is not possible for media, celebrities, politicians, economic or social leadership to do the work of changing engineered systems. Engineers in every business and organisation will learn how to rapidly achieve the perspective shift and implement the straightforward methodology to start building a sustainable future. This course is designed to enlist and enable EVERY engineer in the mission of re-developing all of the current engineered systems into low-carbon, low impact, high quality future.

Over the last decade of offering this course, we have developed a variety of effective conceptual frameworks and core insights to accelerate the learning process of our students.
Students taking the course for credit will leave with a deeper experiential knowledge because they are required to complete a project involving a real life actual change agency project of their choice. Students typically find this project to be both deeply rewarding and central to the development of their knowledge and confidence as Transition Engineers, Managers and Policy Developers. There will also be an online exam and additional small assignments to keep all students on track.
This course is relevant for people in any profession and for those working in the for profit world the non-profit world and for people engaged in their own communities. It is as relevant for very experienced professions as it is for people just starting out.
We need an army of skilled transition engineers and leaders in order to navigate the complexity and urgency of our global environmental crisis. In a world lacking adequate political, judicial and media leadership we can and must take leadership where we work and live, transforming our organizations on mass, co-creating change at all levels of society. This course is designed to empower and prepare anyone that is willing to join in the collective effort to steer their organizations and communities through the carbon transition.

There are also discussion forums, blogs for you to post on, podcasts to listen to discussions, and Wickies to add your ideas and analysis.

This course is being developed as a university course worth 9 points plus a project for 3 points at level 8 as part of a micro-credential in Transition Engineering. The cost for the on-line course with a tutor for discussion and assessment is $600, and the project is $200. The projects are to be presented at the annual international convergence for carbon transition at the end of the year. Registration for the convergence is $550 with a $50 discount for people who have completed the lectures and $150 discount for teams presenting a shift project.
